Choosing a new dining table seems like such a simple decision… until you actually start to browse. Within minutes, you're faced with hundreds of designs, and one fundamental question: should you choose an extendable dining table or a fixed one?
An extendable dining table is designed with flexibility in mind, growing in size when you need extra space, and shrinking back down for everyday use. A fixed dining table, on the other hand, doesn't move, extend, or adapt – so what you see is truly what you get.
Both styles have their merits, but the right style for you depends on your household, space, and how you actually use your dining area. We asked our interior designers for their four key questions to help you figure that out:
How many people do you want to seat?
What will you use your table for?
What shape should you choose?
What dining chairs should you pair with it?
Extendable vs Fixed Dining Table: How to Choose the Right Design
Tips for measuring up
Before you ask yourself any questions, make sure to properly measure your space. This will save you a lot of time, hassle, and even money later.
Start by measuring your dining space at its narrowest points, accounting for windows, radiators, and doorways. Leave at least 90cm of clearance around the table, so that your dining chairs can be pulled out and your diners can walk past comfortably. Then allow roughly 60cm between each seated person, so everyone has enough elbow room.
If you're considering an extendable table, don’t forget to take its closed and fully extended dimensions into account within your space.
How many people do you want to seat?
The first point you’ll need to consider is how many people actually need to sit at your table. We’re not just thinking about a regular day here – but also planning ahead for any new arrivals or surprise guests.
If you're a couple or small family who rarely host, a fixed table seating four to six people might be all you need. There's no point investing in, or trying to find extra space for, capacity you'll never use.
Our Austin natural ceramic dining table comfortably seats six people, creating an intimate dining experience where conversations can flow. Its gorgeous textured base supports a glossy ceramic top that's as beautiful as it is practical, resisting both heat and scratches.
If you think your numbers will go up and down, an extendable table starts to make a lot more sense. From dinner parties with friends to large festive gatherings, an extendable table lets you seat four people on a Tuesday night, then stretch to eight or ten for Friday’s special occasion.
Effortlessly sophisticated, our Calenzano dark grey ceramic design brings modern elegance to intimate and grand gatherings. Its brushed bronze pedestal base provides visual drama and ample legroom, while the durable ceramic top extends smoothly from 180cm to 270cm to transform your dining space in seconds.
All of our extendable dining tables are crafted with a simple, secure pressure steel extending mechanism with a clip lock, concealing the extension neatly inside the table.

What will you use the table for?
Although dining tables are, of course, made primarily for dining, in reality they need to do so much more.
If your table needs to double as a homework station, craft table, or a spot for Sunday morning coffee and newspapers, a fixed table can work better for consistency. This means you’ll always know exactly how much surface area you've got, which is especially handy if you're spreading out papers.
If your usage varies from quiet weeknight meals to big weekend get-togethers, an extendable design like our Vidal natural ceramic dining table gives you the best of both. It brings sculptural beauty and practical versatility to your dining space, transforming from a 4-seater into a 6-seater in seconds.
What shape should you choose?
Shape has a big impact on both flow and flexibility. Rectangular tables, like our Clover design in black ash, are the most common choice for extendable designs, since leaves slot in neatly at either end without disrupting the table's proportions.
Round tables can also extend, often becoming oval as extra sections are added, which is worth knowing if you love the sociable feel of a round table but need occasional extra seating. Our Curva extendable dining table features a sleek round design that seats up to four, then effortlessly extends to accommodate six whenever you need.

What dining chairs should you pair with it?
Dining chairs are easy to overlook when picking out your dining table, but they matter just as much as the table itself.
Choosing chairs for a fixed table is simple, as you can buy enough to suit your table – and that's your final number.
If you’re considering an extendable design, you’ll need to plan ahead, making sure you have enough chairs for when the table is at its largest. Measure how many chairs fit around the table when it's extended and closed, and make sure you have somewhere sensible to store your spares when they're not in use.
As is so often the case when it comes to picking your perfect furniture, this is no ‘better’ option between extendable and fixed dining tables. It comes down to how you live, how often your household size changes, and how much flexibility you need. As a rule: if your numbers vary and you love hosting, an extending dining table will give you the practicality and flexibility to suit your needs - and grow with your guestlist. But if you prefer simplicity and know there’ll be no need for change, a fixed dining table will be your best option. Either way, make sure you choose a table that suits your home for years to come.
