The Colour Wheel
To be able to make an informed decision about the right colours to put together you need to have a basic understand of colour principle.
A good place to start is the colour wheel. The most basic Colour Wheel contains 3 segments each with 1 Primary Colour: Red, Blue and Yellow.

Divide the wheel down to 6 segments. The 3 primary colours are positioned equal distance apart and in the segments in-between a colour is made from both surrounding colours combined. These are the Secondary Colours: Purple, Green and Orange.
Divide the wheel down further to 12 segments. As before all 6 primary and secondary colours are positioned equal distance apart and in the segments between colours are created of the combined two surrounding colours. These are the Tertiary Colours.
