Firstly measure your table, counter or bar from the floor to the base of the surface. Once you have this measurement, we advise that your kitchen stool needs to be 250-300mm (10-12 Inches) from the base of the surface to the top of the bar stool seat. This ensures there is enough space between the surface and the kitchen bar stool itself.

If you want to buy a kitchen bar stool that will meet most height specifications, consider opting for a gas lift kitchen stool as this will have a variable height due to the gas lift mechanism. The gas lift bar stools have another benefit which is a swivel action making it easier to get on and off the kitchen bar stool.

Spacing your kitchen bar stools

Once you have the correct height kitchen bar stool, you now need to decide how many bar stools can fit comfortably in the space you have selected. You need to make sure there is enough room between each kitchen bar stool so that people can sit around the counter or bar and not feel overcrowded. We suggest that for a bar stool of 400-460mm (16-18 Inches) wide, you allow 530-560mm (21-22 Inches) of space and for a bar stool that is 480-560mm (19-22 Inches) wide, allow 610-630mm (24-25 Inches) of space between each stool.

To be able to decide exactly which type of kitchen bar stool to go for, you need to know the counter height you will be sitting the bar stools at. Once you’ve got this, you will need to measure about 250mm – 300mm down from the underside, to give you a seat height range. This will be the important measurement you need to keep in mind when purchasing your kitchen bar stools.

Fixed Height Kitchen Bar Stools

Pros

• Lightweight this makes it more portable and easy to move around and reposition. Some bar stools designed for commercial environments may be heavier as they will be built for minimal moving.
• Sturdy if a stool is standing on four legs it means the weight is distributed across a greater area rather than at one central point. There are a small number of  fixed height kitchen bar stools that are heavy pedestals, these tend to be for the commercial market.

Cons

• You cannot adjust the height as it is fixed.
• No Swivel Action which could make it harder to get on and off.

Gas Lift Height Kitchen Bar Stools

Pros

• Heavyweight stools are more sturdy and will not move about so much, it tends to be the more expensive stools will tend to be heavier.
• Sturdy stools heavy base to provide ample support for the pole and seat .
• The gas lift system allows for a variation in height so that it can be used to fit a multitude of different counter tops tables and even a dining chair.
• The swivel action allows the person to rotate 360 degrees, particularly good if you need to get off the  kitchen bar stool without having to move it every time.

Cons

• Not Lightweight awkward if you need to move the stool frequently as they can be heavy.
• Not as stable as a fixed heigh stool this could be an issue if you have small children.
• Not suitable for children as they could use the stool as a toy and fall off.

The Grayson Bar Stool

Pros

• Good lumbar support, when sitting in the same place for a while your body can often slump, with a back rest it can take off some of the stress on the back.
• The stool feels more secure as you have a supporting surface at the back.

Cons

• The back rest may be seen above the height of the counter top. Dependent on the height of the back rest will depend on how much will be visible above your kitchen counter top, this is a purely aesthetic issue but should be taken into account.
• Kitchen bar stools with a backrest cannot be tucked under your counter or table completely. So the stools will be visible and take up slightly more floor space.

Backless Bar Stool

Pros

• No visible backrest above the height of the counter top so you have nothing to break up the simple straight lines of the counter top.
• Kitchen bar stools can be tucked under the counter or table which allows the bar stools to take up less floor space and keep them away until needed.

Cons

• No back support, so people will probably be leaning and resting on the surface in front of them.
• Easer to fall off if you have had one to many drinks!
