Choosing the Right Height Kitchen Bar Stool

Whilst you are choosing the right design and style, choosing the right height of your kitchen bar stool is essential. Whether it be for home or commercial use, it is important to purchase a kitchen stool that can fit comfortably under your kitchen counter or bar.

Here is our Danetti guide to choosing the right counter height bar stool

Firstly measure your table, counter or bar from the floor to the base of the surface. Once you have this measurement, we advise that your kitchen stool needs to be 250-300mm (10-12 Inches) from the base of the surface to the top of the bar stool seat. This ensures there is enough space between the surface and the kitchen bar stool itself.

If you want to buy a kitchen bar stool that will meet most height specifications, consider opting for a gas lift kitchen stool as this will have a variable height due to the gas lift mechanism. The gas lift bar stools have another benefit which is a swivel action making it easier to get on and off the kitchen bar stool.

Kitchen Counter Height Stools

If you are looking for a stool to fit under a standard kitchen counter height, we would advise you to purchase a stool that is between 610-670mm (24 to 26 Inches) high, in order to fit under the 890-910mm (35 to 36 Inches) counter table. Some of the counter height kitchen stools we recommend are:

If you are looking for a bar stool to fit under a bar height, we would advise you purchase a bar stool that is 710-760mm (28 to 30 Inches) to fit under the 1010-1060mm (40 to 42 Inches) bar table height. Some of the bar stools we recommend are:

If you are looking for a bar stool to fit under a high bar, we would advise you to purchase a bar stool that is 810-860mm (32-34 Inches) to fit under the 1140-1220mm (45 to 48 Inches) bar table height. Some of the high bar stools we recommend are:

Spacing your kitchen bar stools

Once you have the correct height kitchen bar stool, you now need to decide how many bar stools can fit comfortably in the space you have selected. You need to make sure there is enough room between each kitchen bar stool so that people can sit around the counter or bar and not feel overcrowded. We suggest that for a bar stool of 400-460mm (16-18 Inches) wide, you allow 530-560mm (21-22 Inches) of space and for a bar stool that is 480-560mm (19-22 Inches) wide, allow 610-630mm (24-25 Inches) of space between each stool.

When making the decision about which kitchen bar stool to purchase, one your main issues is going to be whether to go for a fixed height stool or a gas lift bar stool.

To be able to decide exactly which type of kitchen bar stool to go for, you need to know the counter height you will be sitting the bar stools at. Once you’ve got this, you will need to measure about 250mm – 300mm down from the underside, to give you a seat height range. This will be the important measurement you need to keep in mind when purchasing your kitchen bar stools.

Because its always easy to over look certain benefits and disadvantages to having one type of kitchen bar stool over the other I have created a list to help you.

Pros
  • Lightweight this makes it more portable and easy to move around and reposition. Some bar stools designed for commercial environments may be heavier as they will be built for minimal moving.
  • Sturdy if a stool is standing on four legs it means the weight is distributed across a greater area rather than at one central point. There are a small number of  fixed height kitchen bar stools that are heavy pedestals, these tend to be for the commercial market.
Cons
  • You cannot adjust the height as it is fixed.
  • No Swivel Action which could make it harder to get on and off.

Pros
  • Heavyweight stools are more sturdy and will not move about so much, it tends to be the more expensive stools will tend to be heavier.
  • Sturdy stools heavy base to provide ample support for the pole and seat .
  • The gas lift system allows for a variation in height so that it can be used to fit a multitude of different counter tops tables and even a dining chair.
  • The swivel action allows the person to rotate 360 degrees, particularly good if you need to get off the  kitchen bar stool without having to move it every time.
Cons
  • Not Lightweight awkward if you need to move the stool frequently as they can be heavy.
  • Not as stable as a fixed heigh stool this could be an issue if you have small children.
  • Not suitable for children as they could use the stool as a toy and fall off.

Kitchen Bar Stools : Back Rest or Backless Stool?

A popular stumbling block when choosing a kitchen bar stool is whether to go for one with a back rest or a backless bar stool. While a lot of people like having a kitchen counter bar stool with a back rest for support, they often don’t like the idea of the bar stool’s back rest being visible above the height of the counter top.
Below I have listed a series of benefits and considerations that you should take in to account before purchasing your kitchen bar stools, as it is often easy to overlook things when you are going through the buying situation.

Kitchen Bar Stool with Back RestThe Mirage Bar Stool

Pros
  • Good lumbar support, when sitting in the same place for a while your body can often slump, with a back rest it can take off some of the stress on the back.
  • The stool feels more secure as you have a supporting surface at the back.
Cons
  • The back rest may be seen above the height of the counter top. Dependent on the height of the back rest will depend on how much will be visible above your kitchen counter top, this is a purely aesthetic issue but should be taken into account.
  • Kitchen bar stools with a backrest cannot be tucked under your counter or table completely. So the stools will be visible and take up slightly more floor space.

Pros
  • No visible backrest above the height of the counter top so you have nothing to break up the simple straight lines of the counter top.
  • Kitchen bar stools can be tucked under the counter or table which allows the bar stools to take up less floor space and keep them away until needed.
Cons
  • No back support, so people will probably be leaning and resting on the surface in front of them.
  • Easer to fall off if you have had one to many drinks!

The Suck UK Sun Jar

Suck UK Sun JarI got the Suck UK Sun Jar because I thought that it was a great ambient lighting device, which would add some light to a room during dusk.

I have had the Sun Jar in my house for a few months now and it is a great light, it doesn’t throw out enough light to read by or anything like that, but is it perfect for lighting the corner of the window that it sits in.

The jar is moulded glass with a solar panel on the top which is used to charge the battery. I have found that on a sunny day I can get a good three to four hours of light from the Sun Jar.

When it starts to get dark the Sun Jar will light up slowly and get brighter as the daylight gets darker.

This does look like its waterproof so you could get some of these to light up your garden, it would make good mood lighting for a BBQ.
